One of my most memorable experiences with the Ball Foundation was an activity we did during a Network Day called the “Atlas Learning From Student Work Protocol.” I really liked it because as a teacher myself, I take my students’ work personally, so it can be difficult to have teachers evaluate that work. But in this activity, the entire group looks at one of your student’s papers in a non-judgmental way. They just state exactly what they see on the paper, then what they think about it, and finally what you might wonder about it. Thus, leading to what you can do to build upon your next steps as a teacher to help your students be successful.

As a BTSA (Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment) support provider, I was able to bring this activity back to my participating teachers and their teams. They, too, had been taking their students’ work personally, so this process really helped them look at their students’ work in a non-judgmental way and then figure out their next steps for improvement.

I’m really grateful to the Ball Foundation for the bringing together of people to share ideas and for the learning we get from one another. This learning is going to support me in being a better teacher and, ultimately, help my students to be more successful.
